Staying ahead of what patients want can be tricky, especially with so much change in the last 18 months.

To get a clearer picture, we surveyed eye health professionals during our latest webinar to understand how patient demands are evolving.

Interestingly, the survey revealed that almost two thirds (59%) believe that the pandemic has changed people’s expectations towards their eyecare appointments. But what does this mean for the future of practices?

Adapting for the future

One of the main elements that was highlighted during the online discussion was the need for advanced technology. Almost a third (29%) felt that the lack of advanced technology in primary care settings has had a negative impact on the quality of eye care, reinforcing the need to consider what technology options are available. 

Encouragingly, almost three quarters (70%) said that they would consider an Optos device and offer optomap® in their practice - with three quarters (75%) believing that patients would be willing to pay extra for the advanced imaging.

What is optomap?

optomap is ultra-widefield retinal imaging technology from Optos which gives a 200° view of the retina in a single capture and produces an image – an optomap - that professionals can use to physically show patients any issues or concerns with their eyes. By choosing optomap, patients are increasing their chances of detecting problems early, such as retinal detachments and tears, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration.

Educating patients

Despite advances in technology, there’s still much to be done when it comes to educating patients on the condition of their eyes. This starts with understanding the importance of regular eye examinations that can spot potential issues early. optomap retinal imaging technology enables a very detailed exam both quickly and from a safe distance.

The survey also found that while almost two thirds (61%) believe their patients are aware that diseases can be spotted using advanced imaging technology, discussions revealed that more could be done to educate and raise awareness to help both professionals and patients understand the benefits of optomap.
